North American Specialized

Data Center Equipment Transportation & Logistics

North American Specialized transports critical data center equipment throughout the United States and across the U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada borders.

From chillers, coolant distribution units and cooling systems to transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems and server infrastructure, we provide specialized transportation using Conestoga, flatbed, step deck, double drop and other specialized equipment.

GPS-tracked transportation, experienced drivers and same-trailer cross-border options help reduce handling and protect high-value equipment from pickup through delivery.

Our Capabilities

Electrical skids secured for data center transport.

Battery Energy Storage & Power Distribution Skids

NAS transports electrical skids and battery energy storage equipment used for backup power and critical power systems. These units can include power conversion equipment, switchgear, transformers and controls, and may require flatbed, step deck or Conestoga transportation.

Motor Control Center & Data Center Electrical Equipment Transportation

NAS transports server and network racks, electrical cabinets, PDUs, patch panels, cabling, rack-mount UPS systems, motor control centers and other data center electrical equipment in standard, non-refrigerated dry vans. Liftgate service is available when needed. Dry vans help protect sensitive equipment from weather and road exposure during transit. Loads are secured inside the trailer, sealed for transportation and GPS tracked from pickup through delivery.

Pad-mounted transformers secured on a Conestoga trailer with the curtain retracted for side and overhead loading.

Pad-Mounted Transformer Conestoga Transportation

NAS transports transformers, cooling equipment, electrical cabinets, switchgear, fuel tanks, cable reels and other data center equipment on Conestoga and curtainside trailers. The retractable curtain system provides the loading access of a flatbed while helping protect freight from weather and road exposure. Equipment can be loaded from the side, rear or overhead by forklift or crane, then covered for transportation.

Data center switchgear secured on a step deck trailer.

Electrical Switchgear Transportation

NAS uses step deck and double drop trailers for taller data center equipment, including chillers, air handling units, switchgear, power skids, generators and UPS systems. The lower deck height helps handle taller freight while reducing over-height routing issues.

Large cooling and thermal storage tanks secured on a flatbed for specialized transportation.

Cooling & Thermal Storage Tank Transportation

NAS transports cooling tanks, thermal storage tanks, pressure vessels, and other large tank systems on flatbed, step deck and specialized trailers. These loads can support data center cooling, energy, industrial, and critical infrastructure projects and are often loaded and unloaded by crane or forklift.

Shipping Options

LTL

Our Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) shipping option is perfect for smaller loads coming from multiple vendors. Instead of underwriting the entire truck, you only pay for the space you need, and the terminal network reaches remote sites without a dedicated tractor. We commonly ship PDUs and ATS units, switches, routers, firewalls, patch panels, MRO consumables, spare drives, and knocked-down racks through LTL. We recommend LTL when more handling isn’t an issue.

FTL

NAS recommends Full-Truckload (FTL) for oversized loads, higher-value goods (due to less handling), and when projects require a specific delivery time. We often transport bulk rack deployments, full-floor cabling packages, entire containment systems, network core cabinets, pre-populated server racks, and at-scale electrical, mechanical, and energy components.

FAQs

North American Specialized carries cargo insurance for the equipment we transport, and higher coverage limits can be arranged when required based on the value of the shipment. For high-value data center equipment, we review the cargo value and insurance requirements before the load moves to make sure the appropriate coverage is in place.

Yes. North American Specialized can deliver equipment directly to data centers, construction sites, staging areas, and equipment installation locations.

We coordinate delivery requirements in advance, including site access, appointment times, loading and unloading requirements, crane or forklift availability, and any special handling instructions to help ensure the equipment arrives safely and on schedule.

Yes. North American Specialized supports just-in-time (JIT) delivery for data center construction and equipment installation projects. We coordinate pickup and delivery appointments around your project schedule, site access, crane or forklift availability, installation crews, and other delivery requirements.

For time-sensitive shipments, our team maintains communication throughout transit and coordinates delivery so equipment arrives when the site is ready to receive it.

North American Specialized offers several trailer configurations for data center equipment, including Flatbed Conestoga, Step Deck Conestoga, Double Drop Conestoga, open-deck trailers, and dry vans.

The best trailer depends on the equipment’s dimensions, weight, loading method, height, and weather-protection requirements.

  • Flatbed Conestoga: Well-suited for electrical equipment, switchgear, UPS systems, cabinets, cooling components, and machinery that requires side or overhead loading.
  • Step Deck Conestoga: Provides additional height clearance for larger equipment, such as chillers, coolant distribution units, generators, cooling skids, and prefabricated mechanical systems.
  • Double Drop Conestoga: Designed for taller equipment that requires even more vertical clearance while still benefiting from Conestoga-style weather protection.
  • Open-Deck Trailers: Flatbed, step deck, and double drop trailers without a Conestoga cover are available for equipment that can travel exposed or be protected with appropriate tarping. These are commonly used for transformers, generators, cooling towers, structural components, and larger equipment.
  • Dry Vans: A good option for smaller enclosed equipment, server racks, electrical cabinets, PDUs, battery systems, and palletized components.

Before quoting a shipment, our team reviews the equipment’s dimensions, weight, loading requirements, origin, destination, and site conditions to determine the best trailer configuration.

Not sure which trailer you need? Send us the dimensions, weight, pickup location, and delivery location, and our team can help determine the right equipment for the move.

Yes. North American Specialized can manage multi-truck and multi-phase data center transportation projects, including shipments moving from multiple suppliers or origins into the same project.

We can coordinate different trailer types, equipment requirements, shipment volumes, and delivery locations under one transportation plan. Whether the project requires a few truckloads or an ongoing flow of equipment, NAS can provide asset capacity and additional carrier capacity through our network when needed.

North American Specialized takes several steps to help protect sensitive and high-value data center equipment during transportation.

  • Our CDL drivers have a minimum of two years of driving experience, with preference given to drivers experienced with specialized and open-deck equipment. Drivers are trained in proper load securement, weight distribution, and load planning to help minimize movement during transit.
  • Before a shipment moves, we consider the equipment’s dimensions, weight, center of gravity, loading method, and securement points to determine the safest trailer configuration and securement plan.
  • When equipment requires crane or overhead loading along with weather protection, we use Conestoga trailers that provide the access of an open-deck trailer while helping protect the freight from rain, snow, road spray, and other elements.
  • For qualifying cross-border shipments, same-trailer service may also be available, reducing unnecessary handling and the risks associated with unloading and reloading sensitive equipment.

North American Specialized takes a layered approach to shipment security. Our equipment is GPS-tracked, loads can be sealed when appropriate, and our fleet is maintained to support reliable, secure transportation.

Our drivers are qualified CDL professionals who meet required DOT safety and drug-testing standards. We also emphasize experienced drivers, proper load securement, route awareness, and consistent communication throughout transit.

For high-value data center equipment, additional security requirements can be reviewed before pickup so the transportation plan matches the value and sensitivity of the shipment.

Yes. North American Specialized can transport retired or decommissioned data center equipment to another facility, storage location, refurbisher, recycler, or other designated destination.

We can support moves involving server racks, electrical cabinets, UPS systems, cooling equipment, generators, transformers, and other infrastructure being removed during data center upgrades, relocations, or facility shutdowns.
